What’s there to do in Wailea-Makena?
Wailea-Makena is known for it’s luxurious lifestyle, beautifully manicured neighborhoods and fine living. Offered are many lavish restaurants, several championship golf courses, tennis facilities, world-class shopping, and many breathtaking beachfronts.
The Grand Wailea, Wailea Beach Marriott, Four Seasons, Fairmont Kea Lani, Wailea Beach Villas, and the Maui Prince are a few of Maui’s finest resorts located in Wailea-Makena.
Where is Wailea-Makena located?
It’s found along the southwestern shore of Maui, in one of the world’s most beautiful settings.
What is the population of Wailea-Makena?
According to a study taken in 2000, there were 5,671 residents, 2,520 households, and 1,522 families living in the Wailea-Makena district.
When was Wailea-Makena developed?

Alexander and Baldwin (A&B) subsidiary Wailea Development Company created this extraordinarily master planned 1500-acre resort on Maui’s southern shore in the early 1970’s. From then until 1989, A&B developed several condominium complexes, a few residential subdivisions, hotels, and two golf courses.
In 1989, the 927 acres of undeveloped land and the golf courses of the resort were sold to Shinwa Golf Group of Japan, who continued the development of Wailea with three condominium complexes, two residential subdivisions and two golf courses.
In 2003, A&B purchased the remaining 270 undeveloped acres of the Wailea Resort and the three golf courses in partnership with Golf BC Group, a Vancouver based company. In 2006 Ron Allred, co-developer of the Telluride Resort, purchased a 51% interest in the Wailea Blue Golf Course and is expected to remodel the course, partially privatize it, and build a clubhouse.
A&B is now in the process of developing the remainder of the Wailea Resort.
Makena
The breathtaking 1800-acre Makena Resort was first planned in the 1970’s and first developed in 1986. It is owned by the Seibu Group of Japan, a large conglomerate.
The resort currently consists of the Maui Prince Hotel, the Makena North and Makena South golf courses, Na Hale O Makena, Makena Place, and Makena Surf condominium complexes. While much of the resort remains undeveloped, discussions regarding re-zoning of parts of the resort and additional development are ongoing.
The Makena Resort is currently in the process of being sold.
What is the weather like in Wailea-Makena?
Like most of South Maui, Wailea-Makena enjoys well over 300 days of sunshine per year and very little rainfall. Close proximity to the coast allows for a slightly warmer climate than upcountry, with frequent ocean breezes to maintian it’s mild temperatures.

Housing prices in Wailea-Makena are currently ranging from near $1 million up to $30 million.
Where do Wailea-Makena residences get thier water supply?
